Bali Adventures: Laura Jayne Powers

My experience with Bali so far has been nothing short of incredible. This tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean has such a rich, traditional culture. Everywhere that I look, I am continuously in awe of the vivid colors, breathtaking landscapes, and on overall beautiful way of life.

The culture in Bali is like nothing that I’ve ever seen before. The people here are passionate about their traditions. Each morning and several times throughout the day, the women place offerings around their homes and work places. The offerings represent a sign of respect to their gods. They are filled with colorful flowers, incense, and small cookies or candies. This unique tradition is not overlooked in Bali. No matter where you are, you will see an offering placed at the entrance to a house, temple, or on the foot of a statue.

We have been blessed to visit several inspiring site visits in Bali. One of my favorites was the PKP Womens’ Center in Ubud. This center is a safe space for women to come share their knowledge and learn new skills. When we visited, we heard several inspiring stories from young women, practiced peaceful yoga at sunset, and had a delicious dinner cooked by the women. It was amazing to see so many women thriving and learning from one another. Another site that we visited was the Bumi Sehat Natural Birthing Center, also in Ubud. Here, women from all over the world are welcomed to give birth. The center practices natural, safe, and loving births for free. They have helped thousands of women bring their children into the world in a safe way. It was inspiring to see how the center helped anyone, regardless of their age, race, or financial capabilities.

Overall, Bali has helped me to open my eyes more to the different cultures in the world. Before traveling here, I’d only ever been to Puerto Rico. Seeing the way that life is here made me want to continue to explore, expand my knowledge, and meet different people. I’m so thankful to be able to have this unreal experience.
